Terra-Cotta Plaque
This plaque was purchased from a garden center as a finished piece. It is made of red terra-cotta clay and had a pre-applied gloss finish.
To finish the plaque we covered the surface with 2 coats of Franciscan Brown Weathered Bronze base coat, then after letting it dry overnight applied a second coat. The original gloss coating presented a bit of a challenge, making it more difficult for the paint to spread evenly. But the second coat covered better and provided a good working surface. After letting that dry overnight a coat of Verde Patina was applied, and let dry for about 10 minutes then we carefully wiped on the high areas leaving the crevasses untouched.
In hindsight, I would recommend a roughing up the original gloss coating before applying the base coat. That would probably help with both application and drying time. But the effect is still a nice one and the plaque hangs on our shed with pride.
